An ad hoc subunit of the HDF 12th Arrabona Surface-to-Air Missile Regiment of Győr recently relocated to Kecskemét to participate in the NATO–Hungarian electronic warfare exercise NEWFIP 2014 “RAMSTEIN GUARD 5”. The regiment is represented at this training event – one of the main tasks in 2014 – with close to 100 personnel and around 50 technical assets.

Following monthslong academic and hands-on training, the nominated personnel left for the HDF 59th “Dezső Szentgyörgyi" Air Base. Besides the preliminary classroom sessions, the training included fire control tasks simulating real combat situations.

The soldiers of Győr started a combined march – consisting of movement by rail and on public roads – on May 31. The tactical-level air defence system exercise coupled with live flying – which involves tactical fighter, SAM and radar units – started on June 2.

Scheduled by the North Atlantic Alliance, the NATO Electronic Warfare Force Integration Period (NEWFIP) exercise has the objective of training national (sub)units, as part of the NATO Integrated Air Defence System (NATINADS), for recognizing electronic warfare technology and using electronic countermeasures.

To the soldiers of the Győr unit, this means that they must be ready to execute their tasks – that is, to detect, acquire and (in this case, to imitate to) destroy enemy aircraft – in spite of the electronic jamming activity.

During the operations, the Győr personnel were cooperating with several units of the Hungarian Defence Forces, since in addition to the host unit, the HDF 59th “Dezső Szentgyörgyi" Air Base, the exercise involved the HDF Air Command and Control Centre and the HDF 54th Veszprém Radar Regiment as well.

Although the five-day exercise ended on June 6, and the personnel of the HDF 12th Arrabona SAM Regiment relocated to their peacetime garrison by the end of the weekend, the lessons learned and analysis team will summarize the lessons learned in the field, in the interest of further professional development.
