UN Peacekeeping Medals for Hungarian Military Cartographers Serving with UNIFIL

Paolo Serra recently presented UN Peacekeeping Medals to the Hungarian staff officers serving with UNIFIL. The May 29 medal parade was attended by László Váradi, Hungary’s ambassador to Lebanon, Consul Márton Béres and János Budai, Hungary’s ambassador to Syria, who was staying in Lebanon because of the events in Syria.
At present, some 11,000 peacekeepers from 37 countries are carrying out various tasks in the mission to implement the UN resolutions. The Hungarian soldiers are posted to the civil-military Joint Geographical Information System (JGIS) Unit at the UNIFIL HQ in Naqoura. The members of the seventh rotation, Lt.-Col. (Dipl.) (Eng.) Péter Lusták and 2nd Lt. Roland Rábel started their one-year service in southern Lebanon in November 2012, whereas 1st Lt. István Veszprémi and WO Péter Hársfa in February 2013.
The medal of the mission is presented at a special “Staff Officers’ Medal Parade" to soldiers deployed here after six months of service, with a minimum of three months of active duty.
After the ceremony, the Hungarian staff officers gave a dinner to the guests and their colleagues working in the JGIS. The program was closed with a short presentation by Lt.-Col. Lusták on the activity of the JGIS, and the ambassadors expressed their appreciation for the Hungarian military cartographers’ high professional standards and their dedicated work.
