Minister of Defence Tibor Benkő and Damir Krstičević, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Croatia signed inter-governmental agreements on air policing and setting up a headquarters multinational division, on Monday, 8th April in Budapest.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Croatia Damir Krstičević visited Hungary at the invitation of Minister of Defence Tibor Benkő. After the negotiations in the Ministry of Defence, the Hungarian Minister called the discussion forward looking and fruitful. The Ministers announced that they had signed an inter-governmental agreement on air-policing, the main goal of which is that the air forces of the two countries can mutually help defend one another’s air space in justified cases. "This is good for Croatia and good for Hungary and it strengthens NATO’s air defence capabilities" – Tibor Benkő said.

During the negotiation another inter-governmental agreement was signed on a Central European Multinational Division-level headquarters, planned to be established in Hungary, with the participation of five nations. The Croatian party was the first to join the initiative. Tibor Benkő pointed out that this type of headquarters would serve the security of the area and of the entire Central Europe.

Minister of Defence mentioned – as an evidence of the excellent partnership – that during the defence co-operation of the two countries already four agreements have been signed over the past six months. As he said, the joint work will continue in the future, too, he mentioned as an example, the drawing up of the co-operation agreement on air search and rescue (SAR). "We have common tasks and common objectives ahead of us. We must take joint responsibility for the security of the European people" – Defence Minister Tibor Benkő stressed.

Damir Krstičević also emphasised the significance of co-operation. "The changed global security situation causes one of the greatest challenges facing modern societies; therefore the intensifying of defence relationship between the allied countries is necessary more than ever" – he stated, adding that "Hungary and Croatia are neighbouring countries, the co-operation on defence level is excellent between us, which has been further expanded today." The Croatian Defence Minister highlighted that the meetings with his Hungarian colleague will become a regular event and so next time they will meet again in the first half of 2020 in order to take stock of the results achieved so far, and to set new goals for the co-operation.
