Outstanding Hungarians in KFOR

Both in May and June, 2018 a Hungarian Soldier won the title ‘Soldier of the Month’ in Kosovo.

WO József Varga serves as a member of the Liaison Monitoring Team (LMT) in Podujevo Municipality. His outstanding working performance exerted in his present post earned him the award Soldier of the Month at the proposal of his superiors. The prize was presented to him on June 25, by the KFOR Commander Major General Salvatore Cuoci in the presence of Brigadier General János Csombók, the Deputy Commander of KFOR and Brigadier General Lawrence ‘Randy’ Powel, the Chief of Staff of KFOR.

WO Varga began his military career in 2002 in the personnel of the HDF 62nd ’Bercsényi Miklós’ Mechanised Infantry Brigade as a squad leader. Over the years he became a Section Warrant Officer, then a Platoon Commander. In 2013 he served one year in Szentendre at the HDF NCO Academy in the trainer position. Later he continued his military career at the HDF Civilian–Military Cooperation and Psychological Operations Centre (HDF CMCPOC).

In June the prize was won by SSgt. Roland Sándor. SSgt. Sándor serves in the close protection team of the Deputy Commander of KFOR.

He began his career in 2009 in the HDF 88th Light Infantry Battalion as an infantryman, then between 2011 and 2014 at the HDF 25th ‘Klapka György’ Infantry Brigade in Tata as a squad leader. Following this he worked in the US for one year at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington. Returning home he received a position at the HDF Military Police Centre.

WO Gábor Ónodi should also be mentioned, who in the month of March with his outstanding work earned the recognition of the KFOR CSM, the NATO JFC CSM and the NATO Strategic Command CSM in the form of a token of appreciation.

With their work they largely contributed to the success of the KFOR operation and the enhancement of the reputation of the Hungarian soldiers.
