A Piece of the Hungarian Maginot Line

The unique collection of MoD Institute and Museum of Military History (HM HIM) has been enriched with a truly extraordinary piece on 20 June, when in the courtyard of the Institute General Director Dr. József Holló inaugurated the armour-domed finding with a machine gun inside, which had been functioning as an unit of a fort. It was explored a few months ago at the southern frontier by military historians, military archeologists and researchers of theatres of operations.

It is not an exaggeration to say that more than a thousand people visited Római part (Roman bank) of Óbuda this Saturday. Of course, there is always a multitude of visitors at the weekends – according to one of the restaurant owners – but this time the crowd was even larger. The reason why the bank of the river was extremely popular with visitors was that HDF 1st Honvéd Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Warship Battalion and Római Bath Sports Club organized a memorial water parade on the Danube.

Grief and Shock All Over the Country

The country was shaken by the tragedy of the Hungarian soldier who died in Afghanistan. According to Mr György Nógrádi, who gave an interview to honvedelem.hu, Sergeant First Class Gyula Kovács was one of the best experts of this profession, he gave lectures and held periodic trainings on explosive ordnance disposal for the experts of PfP countries intending to join NATO.

Knezich Sabre: the Newest Relic

Lieutenant General (Ret.) József Holló, the General Director of MoD Institute and Museum of Military History (HM HIM) received the ’newest’ relic of the institute, the sabre of General Károly Knezich in the framework of the celebration honouring the 160th anniversary of the establishment of the Hungarian Defence Forces. The weapon will be exhibited in the museum shortly.

Well, their suit is worn every day by the staff of the mobile biological laboratory of the Hungarian Defence Forces.

Honvedelem.hu has asked the four lucky young people who have just returned from Afghanistan about the experiences of the two days spent in the Central Asian country. They have all agreed that the helicopter ride was the biggest adventure, and they have decided to stay in touch in the future.

The ‘Real’ Centre of the Country Although the Hazardous Material Supply Centre of the Hungarian Defence Forces (MH VEK) ‘hides’ relatively far, some 5-6 kilometres from inhabitated settlements, for the employees the spectacular surroundings of the barracks are a compensation. Maps simply call this area covered with oaks and beech trees the Pusztavacs forest, where even the air ‘tastes’ better.
