Citizenship Oath in Szabadka

On August 20 a citizenship oath ceremony was held at the Consulate General of Hungary in Szabadka. Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende was the honorary guest of the event, who met with Consul General Tamás Korsós and the President of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ) István Pásztor at the Consulate General, where 37 Hungarians – living outside the borders of Hungary, having applied for simplified procedure of naturalisation – took the oath of citizenship.

“We have come here to do justice to you, to give you back the treasure, heritage, rightful share of inheritance, which was taken away from you, your parents and your grandparents by the storms of the twentieth century" – Csaba Hende began his speech, then he went on: “The nation is a community! Our community, our common past, our common language, our common culture keeps us together. Our common present unites us, i.e. this present day, when we again take hold of each other’s hand, never to let it go" said the Minister.

The Csurog-born, but today the inhabitant of Ada, László Balog Virág and his family appeared at the ceremony. László was the one hundred thousandth Hungarian living outside the borders of Hungary, who presented the application for citizenship. Following the speech the citizenship documents were handed over.

In the afternoon the Minister took part at an ecumenical holy mass in the St Theresa Cathedral in Szabadka. The event was closed with a bread-blessing ceremony and a cultural program.
