Commemorating the End of the World War
Szöveg: Sándor Galambos | 2012. május 13. 6:01On Monday, May 7 a wreath-laying ceremony took place in the Soviet Heroes’ Military Cemetery on Budai St. in Kecskemét. Representatives from the embassies of the Russian Federation and the Republic of the Ukraine in Hungary attended the commemoration which marked the 67th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
Sixty-seven years ago, on May 9, 1945 World War II ended in Europe. The soldiers of the former Soviet army who fell in and around Kecskemét lie buried in the Heroes’ Cemetery on Budai St, and the local government commemorates them every year.
At this year’s wreath-laying ceremony, Mayor Sándor Nagypál gave a speech. Representing the Russian Embassy, Military and Air Attaché Ivan Lutsishin, Vladimir Semidetko, the Head of the Department for War Grave Care, Vasili Zazanovich, the first deputy of the military attaché and Eduard Zalikov, a staff member of the military attaché office were present at the ceremony. On behalf of the Ukrainian Embassy, Ambassador Yurii Mushka and Defence Attaché Andrej Drozd attended the commemorative event.
The participants laid wreaths at the memorial plaque of Col. (Ret.) Gyula Katona, a freeman of Simferopol who had passed away last year. The colonel made lasting contributions to keeping the dead Soviet troops’ memory alive and to the care of the cemetery.
