Held for the first time on October 1, the Military History Day and Market revived the atmosphere of marketplaces bustling with life in the MoD Military History Institute and Museum (MHIM). On this Saturday the organizers offered historical plays, handicraft market, professional presentations, the procession of re-enactors and several children’s programs to the young and old visitors to the Buda Castle.

Col. Dr. Vilmos Kovács, the commandant of the MoD MHIM told us that “the military history day and market has been organized for the first time, and Gabriella Jakusch, the Head of the Museum Pedagogy Department was on the right track when she came up with the idea of this program".

The event attracted a large turnout; people had opportunity to see the museum at work and take a look at the collections of memorabilia, equipment and photos that have never went on public display before. The children could see medieval jewels and honey-cake in the making as well as a show of period costumes in the Marble Hall, while the adults could attend professional presentations by famous historians and researchers inside the “Tóth Ágoston" Hall. The interactive museum guides revived the significant events and the feats of historic personalities in Hungarian (military) history. The true craftsmen introduced their crafts and products at the historical market in the formal courtyard of the MoD MHIM. The organizers laid emphasis on making sure that beyond seeing the finished products, the visitors can have an insight into the process of their production.

The program that lasted until late afternoon attracted more than 600 satisfied visitors (a total of around 1,000 including small children). It is now certain that the next military history day and market will be organized in 2012, because the large turnout indicates that many would like to see it starting a tradition, Head of Department Gabriella Jakusch said after the closing of the event.
