Polish Minister of Defence Visits Hungary

On Wednesday, 25 May Hungarian Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó received his Polish counterpart, Antoni Macierewicz in Lajosmizse. It was the first time that the Minister of National Defence of Poland had paid an official visit to Hungary since his entering office.

Prior to their bilateral discussion, the two ministers of defence attended a wreath-laying and unveiling ceremony that was held at a memorial erected in Szabadság tér, a square in the town center, in honor of the Polish soldiers killed in action during World War II.

In his speech delivered at the ceremony, Dr. István Simicskó pointed out that the histories of Hungary and Poland are intertwined at several points. Even today, the virtues of friendship, camaraderie and heroism are important to our soldiers and nations. The Polish minister gave a short speech in commemoration of the Polish troops who had never returned to their country.

Besides Dr. István Simicskó and his Polish counterpart, the Ambassador of Poland to Hungary, the mayor of Lajosmizse and the Secretary of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites Andrzej Kunert also laid wreaths at the unveiled monument.

After the unveiling ceremony, at a bilateral meeting, the two ministers discussed a number of topics including the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, military-to-military relations, the migration crisis and the Visegrád Four (V4) cooperation.
