Spanish Chief of Defence Visits Hungary

Heading a delegation, Gen. José Julio Rodríguez Fernandez, Chief of Defence, Spanish armed forces arrived in Budapest at the invitation of LTG Tibor Benkő, Chief, MoD Defence Staff. In the morning of November 23 first LTG Benkő received the high-ranking guest with military honors, then the program continued with a wreath-laying ceremony in Heroes’ Square.

Spanish Air Force General José Julio Rodríguez Fernández was received by Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende on a courtesy call before the Spanish guest held closed-door talks with LTG Benkő. Following the meeting, Gen. Fernández proceeded to see the Hungarian coronation regalia in the building of Parliament.

Afterwards the two delegations held plenary talks in Hotel Hadik, where the guests informed their Hungarian partners about the Spanish-led NATO C-IED Centre of Excellence (COE). LTG Benkő informed his Spanish partners about the transformation of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the role of their missions in peace support operations as well as the preparations for the 2011 Hungarian EU presidency. The participants at the talks discussed a number of current issues in the field of military-to-military relations.

Following the official talks the Spanish guests’ stay in Budapest continued with a cultural program and finished with a reception at the Spanish Embassy in Budapest.
