The Mentors Have Prepared Themselves

Szöveg: honvedelem.hu |  2015. augusztus 5. 9:00

Since the end of May a Hungarian mentor team consisting of four air crewmembers and two aviation technicians have been working in Kabul mentoring the Afghan Air Force. The advisors are working as part of the 438th Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron with their US, Czech and Croatian colleagues.

The most important task of the group is to help the Afghan Air Force in restoring a long-unused capability, the use of autocannon and free rockets fitted on the Mi-17 helicopter. To this end, the Hungarian advisors had to complete the necessary training.

At the beginning of the training the coalition partners introduced the weapons system of the helicopter, the specifications of the autocannon and the free rockets, the safety and emergency rules, the tactics and the principles of combat and the flight profiles and procedures to be used during the air gunnery, with special regard to crew resource management.

Afterwards the Hungarian mentors carried out flying missions coupled with live fire exercise, a novelty of which was the use of the autocannon. Although they already knew about the training, as the Hungarian Defence Forces also conduct free rocket live fire exercises with Mi-17 helicopters, they had to learn  thoroughly the academic curriculum and practice the live fire exercises to make sure that the Afghan flight engineers and pilots can receive uniform training.

At the end of their training the Hungarian advisors were immediately “thrown in at the deep end" and now their primary task is to prepare and train the Afghan personnel in the use of autocannon and free rockets.
