Having flooded last week, the water of Rivers Bosna and Save knew no boundaries, nor towns nor lives, but kept pouring toward low-lying areas. The huge body of water damaged houses, bridges and all other man-made features in its way. It isolated communities from the outside world by destroying pylons, cutting off power, telephone and internet services, and there are still irregularities in the supply of drinking water in many places.

A state of emergency was declared in 14 communities. In the wake of the flooding, hundreds of residents had to be evacuated by helicopters from rooftops in Maglaj and Doboj. In many places, the relief efforts were worsened by landslides, during which landmines buried in the war in the former Yugoslavia surfaced.

In the aftermath of this major natural disaster, many countries offered to deliver aid in various forms. The Hungarian Ministry of Defence was no exception, as it donated 1,000 personal tents to the flood victims, which they can use as individual protective equipment as well.

The HDF 64th ‘József Boconádi Szabó’ Logistic Regiment transported the donation to Sarajevo. The consignment was delivered to the Sarajevo base of the Red Cross Society of Bosnia-Herzegovina (RCSBiH) on Sunday. During the unloading process, the local representative of the Red Cross thanked the Hungarian Defence Forces and the Hungarian soldiers for their assistance.
