Distributing humanitarian aid in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan is one among the projects approved by the CIMIC/PSYOPS (S9) section of the 11th rotation of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT-11).

Recently the families suffering from privation in three districts, the needy women selected by the Women’s Affairs Department and the orphanage in Pol-e Khomri received the donations.

Within this project, the HUN PRT CIMIC/PSYOPS section drew up a plan to distribute the humanitarian aid requested from the US Army Bagram air base, and Col. Dr. Romulusz Ruszin, HUN PRT-11 commander approved the plan. On 13 October in the early morning hours 20 tons of US-donated aid arrived in Camp Pannonia, Pol-e Khomri. There was charcoal, bean, flour, rice, cooking-oil, salt, prayer rugs and canvas inside the containers.

The CIMIC personnel packaged the received material into a total of 1100 so-called “family packs" of 20-25 kilograms each. The local governmental partners organized the distribution of these packs, drawing on the assistance from the local leaders.

The previous HUN PRT rotations regularly transferred aid packages to the orphanage in Pol-e Khomri, so it was natural that the HUN PRT-11 should carry on this cooperation. The CIMIC/PSYOPS section contacted the leaders of the orphanage to discuss with them the specifics of the handing over of humanitarian aid packages, the toys collected by the MoD Catholic Military Ordinariate and children’s clothes.

On 23 October, after the morning briefing, the convoy set off for the orphanage. CIMIC POC officers Lt. Csaba Szabó and Capt. Antal Farkas and Catholic field chaplain Capt. Roland Kálinger were tasked with organizing and executing the mission.

The head of the orphanage welcomed the arriving HUN PRT troops and saw them in the children’s rooms. These children have all lost their parents and relatives who took care of them. They live in almost unimaginably poor circumstances, as the orphanage means the only lifeline for them.

The Hungarian troops distributed the aid packages for the orphanage with the help of a local staff of three.

The leaders of the municipal orphanage expressed their thanks for the donation. They said the food received in the packages would be sufficient to feed the children over the coming months.
