The eighth rotation of the Hungarian Defence Forces Mi–17 Air Advisory Team (AAT) arrived at Shindand Air Base, Afghanistan on January 22, 2014.

The main activity of the contingent focused on mentoring the air and ground crews of the Afghan Air Force by providing them flying and technical training. In addition, in order to ensure the sustainability of the training in cooperation with Afghan aircraft maintenance technicians, the contingent conducted test flights with the Mi–171V5 transport helicopters stationed on the air base. As a result of task execution, the eighth rotation of the HDF Mi–17 Air Advisory Team has successfully completed the training of two helicopter co-pilot, three flight engineer and 11 door gunner instructors. Furthermore, the rotation has finished academic and simulator training for five helicopter pilot instructors and commenced on-the-job flying training for two flight engineer instructors.

The aircraft maintenance personnel of the Air Advisory Team continued to provide on-the-job training and mentoring for the Afghan ground crews. The Hungarian aircraft maintenance technicians’ work contributed to 12 Afghan aircraft mechanics’ obtaining 1st grade operator qualification on May 14, 2014.

During their deployment in Afghanistan, the members of the contingent have learned a lot of useful lessons which, once incorporated into the Hungarian training system, will help the conduct of helicopter-supported anti-access/are denial (A2/AD) operations.

During a transfer of authority (TOA) ceremony held on May 26, 2014, the personnel of the ninth rotation of the HDF Mi–17 Air Advisory Team took over from the eighth contingent all further mentoring tasks of the Afghan air and ground crews stationed on Shindand Air Base.
