First Lieutenant Receives US Award

Gen. James C. McConville, Vice Chief of Staff of the US Army recently awarded a token of appreciation to First Lieutenant Balázs Szatmári, an officer serving with the HDF NCO Academy.

As operations officer, the awardee is assigned to the headquarters of the multinational division for the duration of Exercise Saber Guardian 2017. He was cited for the award by his superiors, in recognition of his outstanding performance in this position.

Gen. McConville has awarded six soldiers altogether, with 1st Lt. Szatmári being the first of them. The four-star general presented the token of appreciation – his own memorial coin – to the awardee in the presence of Exercise Director Brig.-Gen. Christopher Donahue and Deputy Exercise Director Brig.-Gen. László Szabó.

The multinational high-visibility Exercise Saber Guardian 2017 – which is taking place in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria – started in early July with a tactical river crossing operation during the Szentes Axe 2017 exercise on the Mosoni Danube, and its official opening ceremony was held in Bulgaria on 11 July.

The multinational staff responsible for directing the exercise is stationed in Novo Selo Training Area (NSTA), Bulgaria, and the deputy director of staff is Brig.-Gen. László Szabó from the HDF Military Augmentation, Preparation and Training Command. In addition, the Hungarian Defence Forces are represented at the event by army scouts, logisticians, operations and CIS personnel, as well as civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) and psychological operations (PSYOPS) teams.
