Minister of Defence Dr. Tibor Benkő Received the New US Ambassador

Minister of Defence Dr. Tibor Benkő received in his office Mr. David Cornstein, the US Ambassador, who was appointed to his new position by the US President Mr. Donald Trump in February. Mr. David Cornstein arrived to Hungary on June 22, and presented his credentials to Dr. János Áder, the President of Hungary on June 25.

In the meeting the Minister said that the United States will remain one of the key strategic partners of our country in the area of defence, and within that in the field of special operational co-operation. “Within this continuously strengthening co-operation, a more effective and closer than ever collaboration has developed between the Budapest Embassy of the United States and the Ministry of Defence" – added the Minister.

Dr. Tibor Benkő highlighted that the Government of Hungary is committed to the close transatlantic relations, on the other hand our bilateral defence relations also play a decisive role in the development and improvement of our national military capabilities. During the visit it has also been said that on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the state-level partnership co-operation between the Ohio National Guard and the Hungarian Defence Forces, which started in 1993, the Ministry of Defence is quite open to the staging of a ceremonial event in Hungary, about which the negotiations have already started.

In the meeting the partners agreed that in addition to the development of capabilities, the fight against migration and terrorism is a priority owing to the current security challenges and threats. After discussing the topical issues and exploring the ways of further bilateral co-operations, the Minister of Defence also gave detailed information about the Zrínyi 2026 National Defence and Armed Forces Development Program started in 2016 to the US Ambassador accredited to Budapest.
