In accordance with a decision made by the Chief of Defence, as part of Hungary’s commitment, a three-strong Engineer Mentor Team (EMT) deployed with EUFOR in Bosnia-Herzegovina from January 21 to July 5.

The members of the team – Capt. István Baranyai, WO László Molnár and SFC József Gyovai – were drawn from the HDF 37th Ferenc Rákóczi II Engineer Regiment. Their core mission was to assist the engineer sub-units of the armed forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) and strengthen their bridge-building capability. They executed their tasks in cooperation with the EUFOR HQ Capacity Building and Training Directorate and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The financial funding – provided by the European Union for the reconstruction of bridges damaged during a flood in May 2014 – was a precondition for the mentoring of training programs and the execution of the tasks. As a result of joint efforts, the team helped with the reconstruction of five bridges and with the renovation of another two over the period of the mission. The restored bridges improve the living conditions of more than 2000 people. In recognition of the EMT’s work, the UNDP sent a letter of thanks to the EUFOR HQ.

The Commander of EUFOR personally thanked the Hungarian team for doing their job with great dedication, often under adverse circumstances, thereby earning further recognition and reputation for EUFOR and the Hungarian Defence Forces.
