Drawing from the personnel of the Allied Headquarters Air Command (HQ AC) Izmir (Turkey) and the Combined Air Operations Center (CAOC-5) (Italy), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) formed the Combined Forces Air Component (CFAC) on March 22, 2011 in support of Operation Unified Protector in Libya.

Eighteen nations – 14 NATO member states, one NATO PfP member state and three non-NATO members – participated in enforcing the UN Security Council Resolutions No. 1970 and 1973. During the operations, the 260 NATO and partner aircraft conducted over 26,500 sorties.

Col. Pál Szűcs, Lt.-Col. Attila Varga, Lt.-Col. Zsolt Plopp and Maj. Tibor Matyi – four Hungarian officers on permanent duty on the staff of HQ AC Izmir – assumed a significant role in the exploitation of the success of Operation Unified Protector, serving in responsible positions right from the initial phase of planning until the end of the operations.
