Making Donations In Regions The Troops Have Not Seen For A Long Time

The troops of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HDF PRT) have endeavoured to make a long journey in Afghanistan. The Hungarian soldiers visited Pol-e-Hesar, one of the distant districts of their area of responsibility. The district that is 170 kilometres from Camp Pannonia is difficult to approach due to bad road and terrain conditions, therefore the Hungarian convoys can only rarely get to this area.

It takes at least 7 hours by car to get there and the same back, even in ideal circumstances.

The troops of the Reconstruction Team have already fulfilled several tasks in the central village of the district. Upon their arrival they met with the leaders of the district in the first place, who were already waiting for them anxiously because a long time has passed since the previous visit of the Hungarian soldiers and the leaders wanted to discuss a number of issues with them. The attendees primarily focused on the new developments and projects that can be implemented in the near future.

Following that, the Hungarian troops handed over the donations to the local administrative organs to facilitate their operation: the district police headquarters, the office responsible for education in the area, and the medical cente of Pol-e-Hesar received help from the HDF PRT. Then the Hungarian servicemen distributed aid among the local population. The leaders of the district put together the list of the 70 poorest families in the area, and the Hungarians distributed the aid packages among them on the basis of the list. The package included, among others, winter clothes, stationery and books, blankets and food, donated by the Hungarian Reformed Church Aid Service to those in need, to contribute to the food supply of the citizens during the winter months. There was an unexpected event – an Afghan boy fainted, and the medical staff accompanying the Hungarian convoy immediately gave him first aid.

Finally the governor of the district invited the Hungarian guests for lunch, and they engaged in a conversation in a good atmosphere about recent events and the current situation. When they said goodbye, the Hungarian troops invited the Afghan leaders to Camp Pannonia to discuss the details of the planned joint projects in the near future.
