The 2015 pre-deployment training events have started in the HDF Peace Support Training Centre (Szolnok). The soldiers of the centre are running three pre-deployment training courses concurrently, namely the training for 40 troops serving with the 37th rotation of the Hungarian UNFICYP Contingent, a mission rehearsal training for staff officers and pre-deployment training for the Afghanistan mission.

The officers and NCOs preparing to leave for the Balkans and Afghanistan “enjoyed the hospitality" of the training center for a week. During this time, as part of the knowledge of the theatre, they obtained an insight into the military geography and religion of a given region, received cultural awareness training, and acquired medical core skills as well. They successfully passed the prescribed peace operations target practices, which is a basic requirement for all Hungarian soldiers who serve abroad.

By contrast, the troops to serve with the UNFICYP mission in Cyprus are participating in a four-week pre-deployment training course. According to schedule, they are going to leave for the divided island in mid-March, where most of them will serve in Sector 4 of the buffer zone, and some of them will fill various positions at the UNFICYP HQ in Nicosia.

During their tour of duty in Cyprus, the Hungarians will be working together with soldiers of more than 10 nations over the next 6-12 months. Besides the Hungarians, there are Serb, Slovak, Ukrainian and Croatian troops serving in Sector 4. The Serbian NCOs joined the training program in Szolnok on February 2 to prepare for co-deployment with the Hungarians in the mission.

WO2 Ben Feasby, Command Sergeant Major of the UNFICYP Force Military Police Unit (FMPU) is also participating in the training. This is the second time that he is supervising the pre-deployment training of Hungarian military policemen.

Those preparing for the Cyprus mission have also completed the prescribed target practices and will hold a closing exercise between February 9–12 in the Táborfalva military training area.
