The government has extended the mandate of the Hungarian Defence Forces’ mission in Somalia until the end of next year. Minister of Defence Csaba Hende submitted a related report to the National Assembly on May 30.

In the report on Hungary’s military contribution to the training mission of the European Union for the Somali security forces (EUTM Somalia), the Minister stated that on February 15, 2010 the Council of the European Union approved the resolution of the European Union on the mission in Somalia. Based on this, the European Union training mission in Somalia was launched on April 10, 2010 with the objective of supporting and strengthening the interim allied government and institutions of Somalia through the training of security forces. On March 16, 2015, the Council decided to extend the mandate of the mission until December 31, 2016. This mission supplements the EU Naval Forces (EU NAVFOR) Operation Atalanta and the European Union Mission on Regional Capacity Building in the Horn of Africa (EUCAP NESTOR), whose mandate also runs until December 2016, the Minister wrote. Considering the decision made by the European Union and the provisions of the Fundamental Law of Hungary, the extension of the mandate of Hungarian military contribution to the operation requires prior permission from the government, the Minister stated, adding that in its latest decision, the government authorized Hungary’s military participation until March 31, 2015.

According to the government program, „Hungary supports the full implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union, and intends to assume an active role in the crisis management operations of the European Union, not only on the continent of Europe but, as an expression of our solidarity, on other continents too, with limited number", Minister Hende wrote, adding that the further Hungarian military participation in the operation is in line with these goals.

The government has made a decision to authorize the deployment of at most ten (at most twenty in rotation periods) troops of the Hungarian Defence Forces to the training missions operating in Uganda, Somalia and Kenya until December 31, 2016.
