Tasks in Kosovo

2019. április 26. 8:35

The KFOR Tactical Reserve Battalion composed of Hungarian troops organised a multinational exercise in recent times in addition to fulfilling the patrolling and standby duties on a continuous basis. The company-level joint training was inspected by Brigadier General Reinhard Ruckenstuhl, the Deputy Commander of Kosovo Forces (DCOM KFOR) and Bernd Thran, the Deputy Head of European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX DHoM).

One of the priority tasks of the forces stationing in Kosovo is to ensure the freedom of movement and to conduct presence patrol on a continuous basis. In the exercise conducted in April the objective was to demonstrate the Kosovo Forces’ high-level of preparedness, and their air lifting and road transport capabilities. They involved those subunits into the exercise, which in the event of a KTRBN-alert will co-operate with the Hungarian troops and with their special capabilities contribute to the successful task-execution. "I have seen here today extremely well-prepared soldiers, and this exercise is a good example for the co-operation of the KFOR and the EULEX forces" – Bernd Thran noted.

In the case of CRC-tasks, it may occur that Molotov-cocktails are thrown at the soldiers; therefore a strong emphasis is placed on overcoming fire-phobia in the Kosovo area of operation (AO), and on the education and practicing of the precaution procedures against the effects of the different lighter liquids. The Austrian contingent of the KFOR Multinational Battle Group-West (MNBG-W) participated with two manoeuvre companies in the recent training. The conduct of Fire Phobia exercises and the preparation of the instructors in Kosovo belong to the responsibility of the Hungarian Contingent. Besides the patrolling duties, however, a situation may arise, when the crowd and riot control capability of the Hungarian Contingent is also required.

In order to enhance efficient co-operation, the KTRBN held a joint training with the designated forces of the Polish company performing the European Union Rule of Law (EULEX) mission’s tasks. The training was focussed on the demonstration and practicing of the procedures used during the CRC-tasks.

The Kosovo Force is an international peacekeeping force operating under NATO command, which is an excellent example of the Alliance with its longest lasting operation. The Hungarian troops have been engaged in the operations since the beginning.
