The soldiers serving with the first, Alpha Company of the 18th rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent (KFOR-18 HUNCON) have already been deployed in the Kosovo area of operation for more than a month. Here the word “first” does not only refer to their designation in the nomenclature but also to the fact that the entire personnel of the company arrived among the first ones in the area of operation. Furthermore, they were the first ones to successfully achieve Full Operational Capability (FOC); and they were the first ones to start performing patrol and standby duties.

The company’s tour of duty the area of operation can be divided into three main activities, namely standby duty services, training tasks and – if the emerging situation requires – deployment in accordance with KFOR’s tactical reserve task system. Therefore, these three activities demand excellent preparedness and a high level of readiness, which is a great responsibility. At the training events, the headquarters takes every opportunity to make sure that the soldiers can perform to the best of their abilities.

Captain Sándor Gégény, the commander of Alpha Company told us that the personnel are highly motivated and very easy to teach, thanks to the presence of a great many young and agile soldiers among them. “We have a lot of soldiers here who are being deployed on their first mission, so this is their first real trial, and they are not afraid to ask questions and they very actively engage in every task. Besides, however, we have many experienced ones among the enlisted men and NCOs, who have already completed many tours of duty abroad. They help, advise and mentor their young comrades", the captain said.

As part of the training events, the Company often cooperates with international forces too. A very good example was last week’s joint training with the Turkish and Austrian companies, as during the exercises, the Hungarian soldiers were making great efforts to develop Crowd and Riot Control (CRC) skills, with particular emphasis on Fire Phobia training. They teach this technique to the allied forces, and thereby create opportunities for our soldiers to familiarize themselves with techniques of different nations, and the camaraderie that develops here can also facilitate joint task execution in the future.
