The history of the noon bell has already been the topic of many publications. The readers of the bilingual (English–Hungarian) book “The Noon Bell in Hungary and the World”, – which has recently been released by Zrínyi Média – can now find a great wealth of heretofore unpublished interesting details in it. On July 12, the Hungarian troops on their tour of duty in Afghanistan held a commemoration at the memorial wall in Mazar-e Sharif to mark the third anniversary of the tragic death of posthumous Maj. Krisztián Nemes, the war hero of the Hungarian Defence Forces.
In the Service of Peace – Medal Parade in Cyprus

On June 22 the personnel of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) lined up for a medal parade. Eighteen Hungarian and six Serbian troops received UN peacekeeping medals in recognition of their tour of duty and of promoting the esprit de corps in the mission.

On May 26 the HDF Logistic Mentor Team deployed to the area of operations to join the staff of the HDF ISAF Combat Service Support (CSS) School. During the first few days the Hungarian personnel met their colleagues in the School and arranged the transfer of military equipment and material stocks.

On Whitsunday a ceremonial service was held in Camp Pannonia, Afghanistan. The attendees received Communion and the padre turned to God for solace in his prayer to comfort the family and relatives of our comrade, a military doctor captain who recently passed away with tragic suddenness.
Change of Command at the Heavy Airlift Wing

For the next three years, United States Air Force (USAF) Col. Keith Boone has assumed command of the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) stationed at the HDF Pápa Air Base. His predecessor, Col. John Zazworsky led the HAW for two and a half years. The current Vice Commander also leaves his post: Col. Frank Rombouts, Royal Netherlands Air Force has taken responsibilities of Vice Commander from Swedish Air Force Col. Fredrik Hedén. The change-of-command ceremony was held on June 17 at Pápa Air Base.
German Surgeon General Receives Medal of Service

In recognition of his professional work and outstanding achievements in developing German–Hungarian relations in the field of military medicine, Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff presented the “Alliance” Service Medal to Surgeon General Lt-Gen. Dr. Kurt-Bernard Nakath, the Inspector of the Bundeswehr Joint Medical Service.
