International crisis management exercise Tisza 2010 was held between June 27July 1 in Szentes. The engineer troops of the Hungarian, Romanian and Serb military were practicing rescue and protecion tasks in a fictitious disaster caused by flood waves on the Körös and Tisza rivers.

We can say without exaggeration that this weekend was about festivals in Tata. The 17th Water, Music, Flower Festival, the traditional summer opening event started on Friday and closed on Sunday, and Saturday afternoon the City of Waters hosted the Regional Festival of Military Bands for the third time. The latter was opened by Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende.

Aid from Újbuda to Edelény

Grosics Gyula Elementary School of Újbuda (11th district of Budapest) has collected nearly ten cubic metres of donation to help the flood victims. The food, detergents and clothes offered by pupils and teachers have been sent by István Simicskó, the state secretary of the Ministry of Defence, to Edelény by a military vehicle the rent of which is also paid by the state secretary.

The farewell ceremony for the fourth rotation of the HDF Operational Mentor and Liaison Team was held on June 11 in Debrecen in the presence of the soldiers’ families. Starting from the middle of June, the US and the Hungarian troops will serve in Afghanistan for six months. They will be responsible for the training and preparation of one of the battalions of the national army.

May 31 was distinguished visitors’ day at exercise Clever Ferret 2010, conducted in the Bakony. Military and political leaders were also present on the main day of the Italian-Slovenian–Hungarian Multinational Land Force’s training event in 2010. 

New candidates supported by Defence Committee

The Defence and Internal Security Committee of the National Assembly has supported the appointment of the new candidate chief of defence staff and the new candidate directors general of the Military Intelligence Office and the Military Security Office. Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende and State Secretary Dr. István Simicskó were also present at the committee hearing on Friday.

In its Wednesday evening meeting the cabinet’s coordination committee has issued flood alert and declared a state of emergency in the region of Bõny, Mezõörs and Rétalap in Gyõr-Moson-Sopron county. On Thursday, June 3, Minister of Defence Dr. Csaba Hende paid a visit to Bõny to see the flood protection operations – in which the Hungarian Defence Forces are also participating.

Dr. Csaba Hende and his close colleagues were received with military honours Saturday afternoon in front of the Ministry of Defence. The defence minister of the second Orbán cabinet, formed this Saturday, was accompanied by heritage troops on his way from the rally in Kossuth Square following the swearing-in of the new government, to Balaton Street.

The Seventh Rotation Has Prepared

Two and a half months ago, 236 soldiers have started to prepare for the Bosnia-Herzegovina mission. The tour of duty of the seventh rotation of the HDF EUFOR Contingent will begin in the middle of July but preparations have already finished. The Hungarian troops departing for the Balkans have proven in the framework of a three-day closing exercise: they have prepared for their duties in the operational area.
