During the visit, the Minister of Defence stated that Europe’s security environment has significantly deteriorated in recent years, and now we are facing new threats from the south and the east. He added that the management of complex challenges from the south such as terrorism and mass migration is an especially complex task, in which Hungary counts on NATO’s increasing role. He pointed out that the new challenges require new responses and novel approaches. Therefore, NATO’s continuous adaptation and modernization as well as the transformation of national armed forces are more important than ever, and the NATO ACT has a highly important role in these processes, the minister emphasized.

At the visit, Dr. István Simicskó pointed out that in accordance with the commitments made at the Wales Summit, Hungary has committed itself to increase its defence spending to reach a target of 2 per cent of the GDP. Our aim is to reach this level by 2024 and to be able to maintain the defence budget at least on this level, which will provide a solid foundation for our new long-term capability development plan, the Zrínyi 2026 National Defence and Armed Forces Development Program.

The last time Minister of Defence Dr. István Simicskó met with General Mercier was during the NATO Transformation Seminar held in Budapest last March. On that occasion, the Minister of Defence informed General Mercier about the plan of establishing the MoD Defence Technology Research Centre. At  this year’s meeting, the minister also mentioned that the establishment of the centre has been completed, explaining that its aims are to develop the armed forces and military equipment, to facilitate continuous innovation and to modernize Hungarian defence industry in line with the armed forces development goals of the Zrínyi 2026 program.
