CASEVAC Exercise for UNFICYP Personnel

Szöveg: Capt. (Eng.) László Gulyás |  2011. július 13. 14:53

On June 29 the HQ UNFICYP Training Cell organized and supervised a cross-sector CASEVAC exercise in Cyprus. A simulated road accident occurred near Sector 2 – which is the responsibility of the British contingent -, near the western border of Sector 4, the responsibility of the Hungarian peacekeepers.

A patrol of the 1st rifle platoon and the medical service gave the casualties on-site first aid and secured the area. It soon turned out that the casualties’ status required helicopter-assisted casualty evacuation (CASEVAC). The nearest helipad is located at the patrol base operated by Hungarian peacekeepers, so the exercise involved further troops who were tasked to secure the landing zone (LZ) and provide the necessary servicing. The exercise directing staff (DISTAFF) was working in the operations centers of the sector HQs.

The training objective was to enhance the effectiveness of cooperation between the sectors and to practice helicopter-assisted CASEVAC in the area of operations and on the commanders’ level. To ensure a more realistic scenario, the organizers chose a site along the border of the sectors where both sectors encountered radio coverage problems. The exercise sponsor – who supervised the conduct of the CASEVAC exercise all along – evaluated it as satisfactory, and immediately went on to point out that a number of further exercises will be mounted without prior notification in order to keep up the readiness state of the subunits.
