Hungarians Have Made The Lives Of Thousands Easier

The HDF Provincial Reconstructtion Team (HDF PRT) has implemented a priority project in the field of infrastructure: with the construction of a new bridge, the Hungarian contingent has helped four villages, thousands of people in Dushi district, the centre of Baghlan province.

Until now, the people living in these villages had a dangerous wire-rope bridge – that could hardly be called a bridge – to access the main road nearby and the pastures where their animals feed, but crossing it required some preliminary training in acrobatics. The elderly, children or pregnant women could not cross the river at all and unfortunately, there were several fatal accidents when people endeavoured to cross the ’bridge’. This is why the HDF PRT decided that a bridge has to be built, and the reconstruction team would finance the construction works.

The foundation stone of the bridge was laid in October 2009 by Major General Zoltán Orosz, HDF JFC Chief of Staff – who was in Afghanistan at the time – and the local entrepreneur responsible for the construction has implemented the project within four months. At the inaugural ceremony of the new suspension bridge Col. László Szabó, the commander of the HDF PRT, together with the Afghan leaders, cut the ribbon symbolizing the opening of the bridge. The locals who were present at the ceremony expressed their honest thanks to the Hungarian troops for having the bridge constructed.

The safe crossing point will link the villages, the main road, and the pastures in the area and allow continuous traffic and transport throughout the year.
