The Austrian EUFOR Contingent organized a sports day on June 1, when a total of 19 six-man teams entered the competition to measure their strength and skills.

Four teams of the maneuver company serving with the Multinational Battalion (MNBN) represented Hungary in the contest. There was another formation which included Hungarians, namely the team of the Battalion HQ comprising Hungarian, Austrian and Turkish soldiers. The competition consisted of four events. First the team members threw hand grenades to hit a 3×2 meters target area. Having completed this task, the teams had to tow away an all-terrain vehicle, and the winner had only a very narrow margin over the other teams.

The first two events were followed up by one of the most difficult yet most exhilarating part of the morning and the whole competition indeed. The individual competitors were supposed to let a 32-kg, four-meter-long log fly as far as possible with a single throw. The enthusiastic crowd of supporters witnessed countless attempts ranging from a 70 centimeter “log-dropping" to a 10.27-meter throw. The competitors’ lack of experience and practice in throwing was plain to see during this event, but fortunately it gave no trouble to the Hungarians, so the first three places went to them. The last event of the program, the 4×1000 meters relay race taking place in the afternoon held great excitement in store due to the different tactics of the teams. Those who completed the hand-off among the last ones in the first leg received a quite high placing on reaching the finish line.

The entire personnel of the battalion accompanied the participating teams to the announcement of results in the evening, which in itself was a guarantee of a cheerful prize-giving ceremony. Cpl. Tamás Danka, the winner of the log-throwing event received the log he had used in the competition as a special prize, with his photograph attached on it and the distance and his placing burned into it.

This day was about sports, soldiers and togetherness. The team members and the supporters helped the ones who were weak at some events. Every participant was happy, felt important and being sort of heroes. Our thanks go to the organizers, the participants and the spectators who supported us so enthusiastically!
