In addition to Hungarians, there are Croatian and Albanian troops on the staff of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT) CIMIC section. Croatian Capt. Slavko Horvatic, Albanian Lt. Olgert Davidhi and Hungarian Lt. Ádám Boór recently mounted a joint patrol in Jelga District, Afghanistan.

The district is very hard to access because its settlements are situated along the River Darya Tangi. The changing water level of the river heavily influences the traffic, as in the absence of public roads, the riverbed is the only way for the vehicles to travel. Made up of the staff of the HUN PRT CIMIC section, the join patrol set out early in the morning, and they planned a daylong trip due to the distance and the quality of the roads.

The patrol first stopped to visit the police chief of Jelga District at the village of Gawmurda.
After the formal introduction some real questions followed, as the multinational patrol was tasked with gathering information about the local people’s problems and their requests directed to the HUN PRT. For the most part, the Afghans were complaining about the cold weather, so they requested warm clothes and blankets from the soldiers. In this period of the year, the region often has temperatures around minus 20 Celsius.

The next stop was the village of Panjsher on the far bank of the river, where the patrol checked the completion of a school construction project launched earlier. The entire population of the village gathered outside the school, waiting for the troops. They had a successful discussion with the project leader on the quality problems that had emerged during the construction process.

In what followed, the patrol headed to the village of Khawja Aowlya, where the soldiers had to find a potential building site for another school.
