On September 29, the members from the Senior Course at the NATO Defense College on a leg of their European study tour paid a visit to the HDF Pápa Air Base. The idea of a NATO Defense College – which is going to celebrate its 60th anniversary on November 19, 2011 – originated with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who identified very early on the need for an institution with a unique education mission so as to introduce NATO’s defense strategy and make it widely known.

Brig.-Gen. Tibor Bozó, the Chief of the MoD Defense Staff Personnel Directorate received the delegation at the Pápa Air Base, then Lt.-Col. Zoltán Vicai, the Chief of Staff of the air base introduced the guests to the history of the military aerodrome. In what followed, László Szarvas, the Deputy General Manager of the NATO Airlift Management Agency (NAMA) briefed them on the role and activity of the nations participating in the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) program and the details of its implementation.

Col. Frank Rombouts, the Vice Commander of the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) talked about the military and humanitarian relief missions. He stressed that the organization comprising ten NATO member states and two PfP nations is doing its best to fully implement the SAC Program.
