NATO Secretary General says Alliance open to further cooperation with Azerbaijan

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday (15 January 2014) that the Alliance looked forward to strengthen its cooperation with his country and thanked him for his nation’s support to NATO operations. “We are determined to reinvigorate our political dialogue including on strategic issues, such as energy security and counter terrorism,” the Secretary General said.

NATO’s Steadfast Jazz exercise gets underway

The Alliance’s largest exercise since 2006, “Steadfast Jazz” kicked off Saturday (2 November) across Europe, including the Baltic states and Poland. The exercise will involve around 6,000 troops and will run for a week. “The purpose of this exercise is to make sure that our rapid-reaction force, the NATO Response Force (NRF), is ready to defend any Ally, deploy anywhere and deal with any threat,” said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

NATO and Ukraine navy together in the fight against piracy

The Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, General Knud Bartels, travelled to the Gulf of Aden on 28-30 October 2013 to visit the Ukrainian Navy frigate Hetman Sahaydachniy deployed there as part of Operation Ocean Shield, NATO’s counter piracy mission. “Ukraine’s ability to plug in and out of NATO’s operations show the high level of interoperability the Alliance can achieve with its partners,” General Bartels said.

NATO and Russia hold joint counter-terror exercise ‘Vigilant Skies’

Fighter aircraft from Turkish, Polish and Russian air forces together with air traffic controllers successfully completed a live three-day joint NATO-Russia counter-terrorism exercise “Vigilant Skies 2013,” on Thursday (26 September). The exercise was the second time that air traffic controllers from the NATO-Russia Council Cooperative Airspace Initiative (NRC CAI) have been tested on their real-time capacity to detect and direct the response to a civilian aircraft hijacked by terrorists in the skies over NATO and Russian territory. The purpose of the exercise is to foster cooperation on airspace security, notably in the field of real-time surveillance and air traffic coordination. The NATO-Russia Council decided to create the initiative in 2002 in wake of the September 2001 terrorist attacks.

‘Smart Defence’ keeping NATO fit for the future

NATO Allies have successfully completed the first of 29 ongoing multinational Smart Defence projects which are to help ensure that NATO remains fit for the future. The project, to develop a multinational logistics partnership on helicopter maintenance in Afghanistan, was part of the initial batch of projects launched by NATO leaders at their Chicago Summit in May 2012.
