The interoperability and training of medical personnel supporting the event is an essential part of any multinational ground based air defence (GBAD) exercise. This is also true of the medical personnel participating in Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2016 in Slovakia, who are undergoing training in addition to providing real-time medical cover.

The main objective of Tobruq Legacy 2016 is to enhance interoperability, which shows itself clearly in the field of medical support as well. Together with their American, Czech, Polish, Slovenian and Slovak colleagues, the medical personnel of Győr representing Hungary at the exercise are carrying out a lot of tasks that are aimed at sharing lessons learned and practical information, and their use under realistic circumstances.

During the first week, led by Slovakian Lt-Col. (MD) Dr. Ivana Gutzelnig, the medical personnel rehearsed a number of tasks such as tactical combat casualty care and mass casualty (MASCAL) procedures as well as the techniques of MEDEVAC by helicopter. The soldiers also familiarized themselves with the structure and functioning of the levels of care (ROLE 1 and ROLE 2). The medical personnel of Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2016 comprises doctors, emergency medical technicians, search and rescue staff, registered and specialist nurses and motor vehicle drivers. While practicing on each other, the close to 40 medical personnel had opportunities to share their professional knowledge and experiences in order to facilitate a standardized and smooth management of simulated medical situations during the GBAD tactical exercise next week.

Of course, all along the exercise, the core duty of the medical personnel is to provide real-time medical cover for the approx. 1500 troops participating in the international event.
