Helicopter Pilots and Ground Crews Get Mentoring

A farewell ceremony was arranged for the soldiers departing for missions on Monday, December 19 at the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base. The sixth rotation of the HDF Air Mentor Team – AMT deployed in Afghanistan at the end of December, while the second rotation of the HDF Mi-17 Air Advisory Team – AAT is about to start service in the first days of January, 2012.
Bidding Farewell to Troops Leaving for Afghanistan

A farewell ceremony was held for the Hungarian and US troops to deploy abroad on November 15 in the Zrínyi Miklós Barracks of Hódmezővásárhely. The members of the seventh rotation of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT-7) will soon commence their service in Afghanistan. The commander of the contingent is Lt.-Col. László Fábián, his deputy is Lt.-Col. George D. Henderson, and the majority of the personnel are drawn from the HDF 5th Bocskai István Infantry Brigade.
Gripen on Gripen

There is an aviation history event going on in Hungary’s airspace: this is the first time that Gripen fighters with Swedish and Hungarian markings are engaging in “air combat” against each other. The idea of the joint training flight originated with the Swedish partners, and the participants of the Exercise Satenas Exchange 2011 had some special badges made with the words GRIPEN MAFIA 2011 on them.
Greeting the Autumn with Military Music

On October 8, Saturday the military musicians of the Hungarian Defence Forces surprised the audience in Hódmezővásárhely by presenting a storming program. Organized within the Vásárhely Autumn Weeks, the 5th Festival of Military Bands on the Southern Hungarian Great Plain featured the Debrecen Garrison Band, the Szolnok Air Force Band, and the Hódmezővásárhely Garrison Band representing the hosts.

The computer-assisted command post exercise (CAX-CPX) BLONDE AVALANCHE 2011 has ended. During the VIP day on September 22, the Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and Ukrainian engineer troops demonstrated their readiness to carry out a joint disaster relief operation in case of a flooding on the River Tisza. The representatives of the Ohio National Guard and the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic also participated in the exercise as observers.

The nominated units of the Hungarian Defence Forces and the partner nations participated in a multinational (Hungarian–Romanian–Slovak–Ukrainian) computer-assisted command post exercise (CAX-CPX) between September 18 and 22. The opening ceremony of Exercise “BLONDE AVALANCHE 2011” of the TISA Multinational Engineer Battalion was held in Hódmezővásárhely on Monday, September 19.

The designated units of the Hungarian Defence Forces (HDF) and the Partner Nations will take part in a computer supported multinational (Hungarian-Ukrainian-Slovakian-Romanian) Command Post Exercise CPX) between September 18 and 22. Brig. Gen. Dr. Gábor Böröndi, the Commander of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade will conduct the “TISZA” Multinational Engineer Battalion’s exercise named Blond Avalanche 2011.
“We Need to Keep the Helicopter Flying”

Two Mi-8 transport helicopters and a large amount of spare parts and other small material were donated by Finland to the Hungarian Defence Forces free of charge. The operating manuals of the helicopters were handed over with all due solemnities on Wednesday, September 7, in Szolnok by Mr. Marcus Rantala, the State Secretary of the Defence Ministry of the Republic of Finland to Defence Minister Dr. Csaba Hende.
Hussars’ Meeting in Nyíregyháza

Nyíregyháza celebrated the hussars on Saturday, August 27. During the program Gen. Dr. Tibor Benkő, the Chief of the MoD Defence Staff and Brig.-Gen. Dr. Gábor Böröndi, the Commander of the HDF 5th “Bocskai István” Infantry Brigade were presented with the token of appreciation of the Hungarian Hussar Foundation in recognition of their efforts exerted for nourishing and fostering the traditions.

Even though he was never a soldier, László Szőke of Kecskemét is a great fan of the army. The 73-year-old jack-of-all-trades has manufactured many small combat vehicles, and all of them are working. He was collecting uniforms for decades, and holds the rank of captain in the guard of honour of the local heritage preserving association.
