Sárosi’s Valor 2012

The pre-deployment training for the 11th rotation of EUFOR (European Union Force) has ended with a three-day culmination exercise (CULEX) that started in Szentes on May 15. The Hungarian contingent will form a maneuver company of the Austrian-led Multinational Battalion (MNBN) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while some soldiers will be posted to fill individual positions in the staff of the MNBN HQ. The designated commander of the contingent is Lt.-Col. Gábor Bartók, the Chief of Staff of the HDF 37th ‘Ferenc Rákóczi II’ Engineer Regiment.

Commemorating the End of the World War

On Monday, May 7 a wreath-laying ceremony took place in the Soviet Heroes’ Military Cemetery on Budai St. in Kecskemét. Representatives from the embassies of the Russian Federation and the Republic of the Ukraine in Hungary attended the commemoration which marked the 67th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

They Have Returned Home from Missions

Thirty-six Hungarian soldiers have served with the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mission, while 17 soldiers and seven policemen completed their tours of duty in the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) mission stationed in the Sinai Peninsula.

Preparing for the Balkans Joint Operational Area

The officers and NCOs to be posted to individual NATO and EU positions in the Balkans Joint Operational Area (JOA) are participating in a pre-deployment training for staff officers in the HDF Peace Support and Training Center in Szolnok. Of the 22-strong group, sixteen soldiers recently completed the basic course for their planned positions with success.

End of Exercise Air Superiority 2012

The fighter pilots of the HDF 59th Szentgyörgyi Dezső Air Base conducted an air-to-air live fire exercise with missiles and autocannon at the firing range near Vidsel, a village in Sweden between March 16 and 23. Ten pilots participated in the exercise with seven JAS-39 C/D aircraft, all of them executing the task with “excellent” and “good” results notwithstanding the fact that they were on their very first live fire exercise of this type.

Mission-Specific Training

The next rotations of the Air Advisory Team (AAT) and the Air Mentor Team (AMT) to deploy in Afghanistan and the students of the mission-specific basic staff officer course (MBSOC) have finished their pre-deployment training in the Hungarian Defence Forces Peace Support Training Center (Szolnok). The helicopter pilots and the ground crews participated in a peace operation target practice on March 6, while the students of the basic staff officer course practiced how to provide on-scene medical treatment to casualties in accidents.

Thanks for the Outstanding Performance

Zoltán Orosz, the Deputy Chief of the MoD Defence Staff welcomed the troops of the fifth rotation of the HDF KFOR Contingent, speaking also on behalf of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence in Szolnok on Wednesday, March 7.

Gripens on Air Gunnery

The fighter pilots of the HDF 59th ‘Szentgyörgyi Dezső” Air Base recently practiced how to carry out close air support (CAS) of the land forces. Maj. Tibor Molnár and Maj. András Beke, the section commanders of the 1st tactical fighter squadron were flying in a two-plane formation to destroy the targets on the ground using JTAC guidance, firing 27mm autocannons and dropping simulated practice bombs. The pilots of Kecskemét are going to participate in the Exercise Lion Effort 2012 in Sweden with five aircraft.

Returning from Missions – Going on Mission

On February 7 a combined welcome home and farewell ceremony was held in Hódmezővásárhely for troops returning from and going on missions. The 6th rotation of the HDF Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (HDF OMLT-6) has completed its service in Afghanistan, whereas the members of the 9th rotation of the HDF EUFOR Contingent in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 12th contingent of the HDF Provincial Reconstruction Team (HUN PRT-12) is about to deploy in Afghanistan.

They Have Returned from Afghanistan

On Tuesday, January 24 a ‘Welcome Home’ ceremony was held for the troops returning from Afghanistan in the community center of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base. Altogether 20 soldiers have now completed their tours of duty abroad. The commander of the fifth contingent of the HDF Mi-35 Air Mentor Team (AMT) was Lt.-Col. Zoltán Rolkó, whereas the commander of the first contingent of the HDF Mi-17 Air Advisory Team (AAT) was Lt.-Col. Gyula Pelczéder.
